The pay range is $163,000.00 – $294,000.00Pay is based on several factors which vary based on position. We bring that vision to life through our values and culture. .As a Director of Technology within the Stores and Properties Engineering team, you will be responsible for leading the Enterprise Inventory capabilities that support real-time inventory tracking across Target’s network of stores and supply chain nodes. You and your teams will design and develop platforms and services that deliver accurate, consistent, and timely inventory data—enabling exceptional guest and team member experiences and driving accuracy and operational efficiency across the enterprise.About the Team and Role:You will play a critical role in shaping Target’s inventory technology strategy—setting a long-term vision, modernizing legacy systems, and advancing platform capabilities to meet evolving business needs. You will need to stay informed on macro trends and lead through complexity, partnering across product, data science, store operations, and supply chain teams to align priorities, ensure integrated solutions, and deliver measurable outcomes.In this role, you’ll use your skills, experience, and talents to contribute to groundbreaking thinking and visionary goals. You’ll guide your teams through change, champion new technologies and development processes, and foster a culture of agility, speed to market, continuous improvement, and innovation. You will manage global teams and act as a change agent to enable, empower, and inspire delivery of solutions that drive Target’s growth—all while assisting senior leadership in managing financials across your focus area.You’ll lead and grow a team of high-performing technology professionals—supporting career development, encouraging calculated risk-taking, and modeling a culture centered on care, growth, and winning together. You will ensure technology and teams are healthy, scalable, and robust by influencing technical direction, owning architecture decisions, and planning for long-term resilience and platform performance. Our most scaled services see around 10-20K TPS during peak usage and our clients demand low latency (
30ms ) even at scale. Ownership of root cause analysis, non-functional requirements, and remediation will also be expected.Additionally, you will:
- Build strong cross-functional and external partnerships, including responsibility for managing key technology vendors.
- Define and align staffing plans with business objectives and lead the development, motivation, and coaching of managers and team members.
- Ensure teamwork, high performance, and a culture of engineering excellence that attracts and retains top talent with a focus on inclusion and diversity.

- Four-year degree or equivalent experience
- 15+ years of related experience; 5+ years of experience software engineering or reliability engineering and 5+ years in leadership roles
- Stays current with new and evolving technologies via formal training and self-directed education
- Deep understanding of technologies related to:
- CI/CD: We use Code Pipelines with Vela for continuous integration and deployment, leveraging Docker for containerization. Automated testing is supported by tools like Gatling and API Overwatch.
Languages & Frameworks: Our codebase features Kotlin, with frameworks including Spring Boot, Micronaut, and http4k, built and managed with Gradle.Databases: We work with a mix of relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, Cassandra, RocksDB, and MongoDB to support diverse data needs.Observability: For metrics and monitoring, we use Grafana for visualization, and Logstash and Kibana for centralized log aggregation and analysis.
- Strong business acumen, ability to connect technical direction to business strategy and goals
- Ability to convey technical solutions clearly beyond immediate team
- Proven technology leadership experience within a complex, high-transaction business environment
- Proven experience leading corporate IT teams and success in building high performing teams
- Experience building and leading Agile teams that have adopted modern CI/CD practices and have hosted workloads in the external or private cloud environments
- Experience in managing global teams
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for communicating effectively at the highest levels of management
- Experience managing budgets, expense/capital planning
This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
